I studied Fine Art at Gray's School of Art, Robert Gordon University — on the northeast coast of Scotland, about as far from the Gulf as a studio can get. I grew up in the Middle East, between Muscat and Dubai, and that contrast has never really left me. The stillness of the north, the light and pace of the Gulf — both show up in how I paint.
I'm not trying to reproduce what a photograph already does better. To me a painting should stay symbolic — less about likeness, more about what the stroke and the colour can carry on their own. What ends up true on the canvas comes from how the paint moves, not how closely it matches the world.
